THE SUMMONING! This is how I felt the last week when I got put down with the flu. Every year the flu comes around and smacks me across the face. You'd think I would avoid it but instead I dive deep in to it only to be reborn STRONGER, FASTER...or just really glad it's over. I'm pretty much over it a week later but still a little sniffles. Of course it would be worse. I received a phone call from my Mom yesterday that my twin brother is out of commission with what they thought at the time was this appendix but now they think is a parasite he likely picked up during his Honeymoon in Greece. Do me a favor and send some healing vibes his way.
Adventure has risks and consequences. We trek in to the unknown because it's exciting. I call it "the impossible task of knowing". Sometimes you wind up with a parasite. Sometimes you fall through a hole. Other times there isn't much consequence other than you feeling like you're going to shit yourself. Such was the case when Lina Savanna and I headed in to the woods for a night hike shoot at one of my favorite spots in all of LA, Rustic Canyon aka Murphy Ranch. Those new to the site may not know the history of Murphy Ranch but the long short of it is that Murphy Ranch was a Nazi Sympathizer camp buried deep in the Santa Monica Mountains at the bottom of a set of 300 stairs. It later became an artist colony and is now just a graffitied up set of buildings.
Now I had never been to Murphy Ranch at night but I'm a huge fan of hitting up these kind of locations both in the day and in the night. Lina and I decided to take an edible and up the ante as we headed down in to the abyss. As soon as we entered "The Garden" (the opening portion of Murphy Ranch) my flashlight completely died. I had been using this light for night shoots and it had a tendency to break but never in the middle of a shoot just from turning it on and off. Needless to say this is the last time I'll use that brand and I've actually replaced it with an amazing light but this incident did serve to freak us the fuck out. Luckily I also brought some rad glow sticks I had been wanting to use for a shoot and the results are amazing. We only shot for a little bit as the circumstances freaked us out including all sorts of rustling but the images are definitely powerful. As we left Murphy Ranch and entered back in to the neighborhood entrance a security guard stood there scowling at us and said, "THE PARK IS CLOSED AFTER DARK". That was likely my first and last night time visiting Rustic Canyon at night so enjoy!
