Ria Fend - Something Wicked

No matter how many different kinds of women I shoot I often have conversations where people are like, "You shoot these kind of women".  And for every one of those conversations I just pull up my photos and show a bunch of different types.  That being said, I do love alternative women.  But what really constitutes an "alternative woman"?  It's not about being goth, punk, gypsy, indie, or anything like that (though I do love those women).  To me it's an attitude about wanting to live your life the way you want to live it.  All the women I shoot are creatives including musicians, painters, photographers, illustrators, graphic designers, models, stylists, illustrators, filmmakers, writers, etc. and being an artist is probably going to wind up putting you in the alternative category one way or another but really alternative to me just means not cookie cutter.  I think often when you see women portrayed in fashion photography that many of them are meant to be a blank canvas  to call attention to other things but I always want the personalities of my subjects to shine through.

But alternative types can get just as generic as any one else.  This is a big reason I rarely shoot pinups.  A lot of the pinup style is contingent on all the elements looking a certain way, but when I say today's subject Ria Fend I knew that would not be the case.  Ria is a UK-based model, graphic designer, and horror lover.  She was on her way in to town to do some work with Hot Topic and wanted to find a cool photographer or two to shoot with.  A mutual friend of ours suggested me.  Ria and I connected and I decided to take her to one of my favorite places Cobb Estate.  I had shot in Cobb Estate a few times but never really made my way deep in to the hike.  There's still a lot to explore there but Ria and I found a really cool reservoir at the top.  We had a fun time time together talking Doctor Who, Joy Division, horror movies, UK life, and all sorts of things.  She was a cool cat for sure even bringing her own rad latex.
