Ya know that feeling when it seems like you're really busy and very little is getting accomplished but really lots is happening? I feel like I'm in a whirlwind of swirling activity lately with photo/video shoots and working but I'd rather be busy than decidedly not so let's chalk this up as a good thing. Since last I posted I've had new shoots with Stephanie Weitekamp, Justine Bruhanski, Lauryn Ipsum, Alondra Excene Shields, Sophia Sirena, and Catherine Coan. Of those, the shoot with Lauryn Ipsum might have been the most exhausting as we went on a four mile hike that included a waterfall.
In case you can't tell, I love hiking shoots. Today I'm presenting one of my favorite hiking shoots with Sapphire Jewell. Sapphire and I met when I was hired by The Velopheliacs to photograph their band at a show in Boyle Heights. Sapphire plays in a band called Gypsum that was opening for The Velopheliacs and we hit it off. I knew I wanted to take some more photos of Sapphire after photographing her playing so we made plans to get together and shoot. Our shooting day turned out to be really odd though. I took Sapphire to the allegedly haunted Cobb Estate where I previously did shoots with Stephanie Inagaki and Lady Krondor but much to our surprise and dismay we arrived to find police with military-style rifles blocking the entrance and a helicopter overhead. Whatever the situation here was, it was clearly not a day for us to take photographs there. I had read earlier in the day about another hiking trail not too far away (in a different set of woods) that I only avoided because some people had said the trail was a bit run down. We wound up driving in to a neighborhood and walking past a house to pick up the trail. This hike wound up being extra killer and taking us through a winding path that afforded plenty of interesting photographic scenarios and we had a great time getting to know one another. What I particularly liked about our shoot is that Sapphire looks like she really belongs on a hike and enjoyed the journey. Overall our shoot was a major success and I hope to see Sapphire again soon for more photos.
