Rad times this weekend. On Saturday I headed to The Ren Gallery for Mikael B's new show. Lots of killer work and some cool networking opportunities. I almost got in to a scuffle with one of the artists in the show. I'm standing outside with my buddy Nick when this guy (who is all over some girl who is clearly not his girlfriend by the way she was reacting) says, "Hey man, come take our picture." Photographers get this request all the time. There are a few professions where this happens. If you deliver pizzas (and for some reason I think this primarily happens to pizza delivery and not most other food services) then people will say, "Hey man, let me have that pizza!" It's like there's some sort of entitlement when it comes to photos and pizza. If you saw a guy with a plunger and wrench would you say, "Hey! Come fix my toilet!"? I brushed him off and said, "I'm cool". He responded that I was in fact "not cool". This led to a bit of standoff between us where essentially I was asking him what his deal was and he told me to "walk away". My assessment of the situation is that he was drunk, expecting that because he's an artist in a show that he should be able to hook up with any girl he wants, wanted to impress this girl, assumed I would want no part of him, and was surprised when not only I stood up for myself but I was being very logical and calling him out for being rude instead of instigating a further fight. He sidled up very close, leaned in and said, "I'm sorry".
You know where you won't almost get in to fights? The Cannabis Cup. The Cannabis Cup may be a place of some debauchery but stoners are chill. Yes there are drinks for sale but the vast majority of people are just getting high and enjoying the life. When I first got offered press passes to The Cup I knew that I wanted to bring two of the most beautiful models I shoot with, who also happen to be two of the biggest stoners I know, Mel Montesi and Angelina Savanna Morales. This turned out to be quite the challenging day. Mel doesn't have a car and lives on The Westside. I decided since I was picking up Mel across town that it was only fair I also pick up Angelina in Hollywood. What I didn't anticipate is the crazy amounts of traffic I would hit during the day. The entire ordeal from Highland Park to Hollywood to Marina Del Rey all the way through town to San Bernardino honestly took me somewhere in the range of 5-6 hours.
We finally arrived at The Cup and had a great time. Mel and Angelina had a cool chemistry and we took some fun photos. Late in the game I decided that I really wanted to try this edible PB&J I had seen several times throughout the evening. As a kid I was obsessed with PB&J so this naturally seemed like a great idea but turned out to be a big mistake. I ate the sandwich at 9:30PM, The Cup ended around 11PM, Mel wound up driving my car back as I was out. I couldn't drive again until 1:30 in the morning. Still took some killer photos. Enjoy!
