Happenstance and ego are often in direct conflict of one another. Though it seems like they wouldn't be I can tell you that at times you are presented with a situation that works out well but something along the way tells you that you have to mess with it or because someone reacted a certain way it somehow wasn't meant to be. This thought persists in spite of the fact that the cards are laid out in front of you and we miss an opportunity.
This brings me to today's post: Joni Payne. Joni and I met literally at the beginning of this shoot. Originally this was something set up for my friends over at Amadeus Magazine. I've posted here about Amadeus in the past. Typically the way an Amadeus shoot works is that I'm contacted with the date and time when the interviewer will be meeting with the artist. I show up and shoot during the interview and then I am allotted a certain amount of time for additional shots where I call the action. On this occasion the interviewer couldn't make it so I would be doing the shoot by myself. I showed up to Joni's Hollywood recording space for the shoot. Typically these Amadeus shoots involve the artist showing off work, talking about their process, etc. But because there was no interviewer the shoot became largely something closer to the sets I do, and even included a stylist that Joni provided. We had a killer shoot and I loved shooting with Joni.
Fast forward a few months to the issue being released. Somewhere along the line a miscommunication occurred and the photos never wound up being used. I respect Amadeus so there was no hard feelings towards them but it left me with an ego question: what to do with the photos? For the last month or two I've let them sit on my hard drive but the happenstance is that I love photographing talented artists (especially ones as stunning as Joni), I have a website where I put out the photos, I did the work, etc. So today I present Joni Payne.
