You...boy! What day is today? Oh right it's Christmas Day! Christmas in LA is pretty exciting because it's one of the few times of year where things are pretty dead. Traffic is at a minimum. A lot of the out-of-towners are out of town. It reminds me of what it's like to be in a small town. In my little town of Southampton, Massachusetts one of my favorite times of year was Christmas for one particular reason: Christmas lights! My Mom would drive me and my brother around through all kinds of different neighborhoods checking out the Christmas lights. The big blinking ones we referred to as "boinkers".
My perception of LA for years has been that not very many people put up lights and that's probably true if you take Los Angeles on a whole but I discovered this year through all my Lyft driving that there are some neighborhoods where this tradition is clearly a big deal. So when I made plans for a night shoot with the returning Ashley Scott I knew that seeking out Christmas lights would be the way to go (and in fact we found some Hanukkah lights too!). Actually our set wound up taking us a few other night spots that I've been wanting to shoot as well so we trekked from the Christmas lights in Mandeville Canyon in Brentwood to a solitary gate in Culver City to the Berlin wall at LACMA to Lake Hollywood Park and ending at neon weed sign in West Hollywood. The whole set isn't festive but since a big chunk of it is I wanted to put out the set today as my tribute to the season. Happy Holidays!
