Justine Bruhanski - Antelope Valley

Anyone that isn't completely new to the site knows that I love a good adventure.  When people come to LA and ask me what they should see it's hard for me to narrow it down because I love it all (though I usually recommend the hiking).  For my shoots I go out of my way to do a lot of research in to some of the most fascinating locations possible but every once in a while it's not my location, it's my subject that picks the spot and I absolutely love it.  Maybe even more than finding my own places I really love when the people I'm photographing take me to places they consider cool.

Justine Bruhanski and I met through Instagram and had a strong love of each other's work.  For our shoot I told her I was happy to come to her just north of Los Angeles in Antelope Valley.  I really hadn't done any projects up there so I was stoked for something completely new and she did not disappoint.  Much of Antelope Valley is desolate desert land with plenty of urban decay.  Just saying those words is music to my ears.  Not only did we get to go to some rad urban decay spots, they also happened to be locations from two of my favorite movies!  We first headed to the gas station from Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects.  I cannot express how much I love this movie so seeing this little old gas station and then the adjacent motel where the majority of the bad times happened was killer indeed.  After that we found a little stop off spot with a strange boat just kind of hanging out.  No movie reference, just rad.  Finally we headed to the church from Kill Bill (another of my all-time favorite movies).  Justine and I had a rad time and she was just perfect for these locations with a very macabre kind of feel including (spoiler alert) a little bit of blood towards the end.  Ultimately these are locations that it doesn't really matter that they were in movies (which is good because the people guarding the locations did not appreciate us shooting around there without permits) but the vibe is the thing that matters and I think the vibrations here are strong.
