Happy Halloweekend! I'm currently in my apartment, it's raining here in Los Angeles, and it's that spooky time of year. The rain reminds me of two years ago on Halloween I hung out with future Kung Fu Babes Angelina Prendergast and Elizabeth Ann Poinsette. Angelina and I made plans to go to the West Hollywood Halloween Parade which isn't really so much a parade as LA's answer to the Folsom Street Fair (if you don't know that one then look it up) with people adorning every costume imaginable in one big block party on Santa Monica Blvd, the Capital of Gay WeHo. This was actually my very time meeting Elizabeth. The girls wore beautiful iridescent wings that every passer by love and wanted photos with them. It also rained like crazy. Tomorrow is the parade and it rarely rains in LA two days in a row so it's hard to say but if it's going to rain a bunch then this is certainly the time of year here.
To celebrate Halloween this year I headed out to the desert on Friday to return to Lake Dolores Waterpark with Angelina Savanna Morales aka Lina Savanna aka Raven Rockette. Lina had been to Lake Dolores years prior with photographer Nate "Igor" Smith. If you're not familiar with Nate's website drivenbyboredom.com you should check it out. I didn't want to step on their shoot but fortunately our shoot was nothing like there's because of our X-Factor, SF Makeup Artist Rali Mladenova aka TheElephantPink. Rali conceptualized and painted a dope skeleton on Lina with UV paint that we shot with blacklight. I don't want to give away too much about the shoot but you can see some rad teasers on my Instagram.
This was my first time working so closely with Rali but this was not our first shoot together, which brings me around to today's set. Earlier this month I posted "A Splash of Decay" with Kira Lawrence. The makeup in that shoot was done with Kira's good friend Heather Honey. I didn't meet Heather the day we shot that, as it was an impromptu kind of thing, however I did meet Heather later and we've since become friends and talked about doing some work together. Heather approached me last month mentioning that another makeup artist she was friends with on IG would be coming down from SF, the two of them would each be painting a model (one of them being Kira), and wanted to know if I would be interested in photographing the painted models. I'm sure you've figured out by now that the makeup artist was TheElephantPink aka Rali. I was already a fan of Heather's work and once she she showed me Rali's work I was further blown away. The other model would turn out to be Heather's friend Cindy Paola. The second I saw Cindy I knew I wanted to photograph her.
The day of the shoot came. Heather and Rali had decided on vampires and I chose to return to one of my favorite spots, Solstice Canyon. All of my shoots in Solstice had concentrated on the trail and the main mansion ruins in the middle of the trail, but there is a second building towards the end of the trail which you can see a bit in my set with Ashley Scott, but I hadn't really spent a whole lot of time shooting in there so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. The five of us met up at Kira's apartment in Santa Monica. I showed up way too early since the girls would be doing makeup for 4 hours, but I wanted to get to know Rali and Cindy and the payoff for that was wonderful. Heather painted Cindy and Rali painted Kira. They both looked spooky, sexy, fantastic. After the makeup sesh we headed to the location and had a wonderful time. Kira and Cindy had a great chemistry, and being in their dope makeup only helped. I never push an agenda when it comes to the story of a set but in my mind there was both a romantic quality between them as well as an almost familial relationship that vampires who have been alive for long periods of time would certainly develop. The five of us had a wonderful time together even dubbing ourselves Sexy Squad (which I can't disagree with given all four women involved are babes). We all put a lot of love and thought in to shoot out of our love for art and all things spooky so I hope you enjoy our Halloween set "Immortal Love".
