West Palm Beach (Art Basel 2015)

I don't think I've ever mentioned this on KFBlog before but my family lives in South Florida.  I was born and raised in Western Massachusetts but some ten years ago my parents moved down to South Florida to be closer to my maternal Grandparents.  My Uncle (my Mom's brother) had also been living down there with his family for some time.  My older brother moved there after Law School and eventually my twin brother moved there to go to Law School.  I even briefly lived there between Ithaca and Los Angeles, which is where I had my first real involvement in the Fetish Community.  Though my relationship with South Florida didn't begin really until my 20's I have some definition of roots there.  That being said, South Florida is huge.

They say Los Angeles is huge but other than LA there isn't really a city in the area that compares (sorry San Diego), but in South Florida you have Miami all the way down at the bottom (where we were for Art Basel), about 40 minutes north you have Fort Lauderdale, about an hour north of there you have West Palm Beach, and in between there are a bunch of varying sized communities.  South Florida is a major metropolitan area.  My family has always lived in the more Northern part of South Florida, and though I was living with my folks during my year down there, my connection has always been to lower section, mostly around Fort Lauderdale where I worked and made a lot of friends.

I rarely spent much time in Miami until this trip other than a few day and evening trips so I loved getting more familiar with the Miami area, but when I had the opportunity to spend a few days with my family, I did.  In the first few days of our trip I headed up to Wellington for Thanksgiving where the bulk of my family had gathered at my parents' house.  I thought this would be my only chance to go up due to the amount of work that needed to get done in Miami plus a lack of my own transportation.

The big time constraint was that Angelina always needed to get back to Los Angeles in time for a big-time collab with Hueman for Fandango to promote Star Wars: The Force Awakens (which I've included a video of down below).  To remind you, we also drove so this meant we would need to leave Miami at least three days before she needed to be there.  At a certain point it was obvious that each of the murals needed more time.  We had been slowed down by various unforseen circumstances, particularly the vast rain.  Angelina game planned that we would stay the extra days to work, she would then fly back to LA for the gig, fly back a few days later in time for us to finish up, and then drive back to LA (where she would then fly off for Cuba).

Angelina's journey back west meant I would have her truck for a few days.  I decided to head back up north to spend the evening with my folks, and the next day head to West Palm Beach where I would grab lunch with both of my brothers (who work at the same law firm in West Palm), and then explore the new street art.  Just about a month prior to Art Basel (the smart way to go) a group called Canvas put together a series of murals by high level artists all around the city.  I didn't photograph every single one but these were definitely my favorites.
